Hardwood Stair Installation in The Greater Grand Rapids Area
Stairs are the first thing guests see and the hardest-working surface in any home. Absolute Flooring and Design designs and installs hardwood staircases across The Greater Grand Rapids Area that feel solid underfoot, match the rest of your flooring, and stand up to decades of daily traffic.
We handle it all in one trip: pulling old carpet or treads, leveling the stringers, custom-milling nosings to match your hardwood, installing treads and risers, and finishing with a low-VOC sealer. One crew, one schedule, one warranty - not a subcontractor handoff halfway through.

Solid vs. engineered treads - which to pick
Solid oak, maple, and hickory treads are the gold standard for staircases. They sand and refinish multiple times, and a quality solid tread will easily outlive a 30-year mortgage - see our real solid hardwood page for more on species options.
Engineered treads are a smart pick when you're matching an existing engineered floor or building over a concrete-slab addition. They're dimensionally stable, less prone to squeaking, and finish to look identical to solid wood once installed.
- Red oak, white oak, maple, hickory, walnut - all in stock
- Custom stains color-matched to your floor (free sample boards)
- Open-end, boxed, curved, and winding staircases
- Matching nosings milled in-house when manufacturers don't carry one

Learn moreWhat the installation process looks like
Day one is demo and prep. We remove existing carpet, treads, or old flooring, vacuum out the staircase, and shim any loose stringers so the new staircase doesn't squeak. On day two we install treads, risers, and nosings with construction adhesive and finish nails - no visible fasteners. Day three is finishing: stain (if requested), a few coats of polyurethane, and a final detail pass.

Pairing your stairs with the rest of your floor
Most homeowners want the staircase to read as a continuation of the main floor, not a separate project. We work from the same stain batch as your hardwood flooring or refinishing job and use the same finish sheen, so the stairs blend in instead of standing out. Want a deliberate contrast instead - dark treads with painted white risers, say? We'll mock it up on a sample board before ordering anything.

Hardwood Stairs - frequently asked questions
Yes. We remove the carpet, padding, staples, and tack strip, then inspect the treads underneath. If they're solid, we build on top of them; if they're particleboard or damaged, we replace them as part of the job.
A standard 14-stair job runs 2 to 3 days end to end - demo on day one, install on day two, finishing on day three. You can use the stairs the next morning, with a full cure around 7 days.
That's the goal on most jobs. We bring stain samples to your home, brush them onto a piece of the same wood species, and let you pick before we order anything. You see the real color on the real wood, not a brochure swatch.
No more than any other hard surface. We finish stairs with a matte or satin polyurethane rated for lower slip. If you've got pets or small kids in the house, we can add discreet anti-slip strips under each nosing.
