Laminate is a click-lock floating floor in the main room, but on stairs it has to be glued down and mechanically fastened. We use construction adhesive plus hidden brad nails behind the nosing on every tread, glue the riser caps in place, and finish with color-matched caulk so there are no visible gaps. Done right, a laminate staircase runs quiet, holds up to scratches, and is hard to tell from real hardwood at a glance.
